mora

An immersive, collaborative, interactive composition.

Built for the Clarice's NextNowFest at the University of Maryland, mora invites people to explore layers of a composition through numerous switches, sliders, dials, and more.

Entering the room, you are greeted with colorful lighting and a low hum. Stepping up to a panel, you see a combination of unlabeled switches and knobs. You explore what effect they have - new parts enter in ensemble to the low hum! Then, another visitor enters, adding more layers and affectation to the mix.

mora is a system that creates an immersive and interactive audio/visual experience. A custom-built controller interfaces with a composition on Ableton Live audio software, and syncs with an array of speakers and lights to create a small estuary of sound and light.

The panels of the controller are unlabeled and entirely re-mappable, creating space for mystery and continuous exploration, as well as re-purposing across a variety of future compositions.

mora was created using Arduino-based micro-controllers, along with a lot of circuitry, LEDs, pressure sensitive resistors. The composition was composed in ableton live and is constantly being revised as the project develops. Because the controls are re-mappable, mora is easily re-invented for future compositions and collaborations.
